I really enjoyed this novel by Yomi Akinode. What a crazy, convoluted, wild, but well-researched story. It takes the reader from Lagos to London, from Mumbai to Manchester as the novel's many characters are woven into a fast-paced and very realistic escapade involving drug-smuggling and intrigue.
The book keeps the reader focused. If one skips a page, one misses some critical information to put the pieces together. It is definitely complicated, however Akinode manages to keep his readers aware of the convoluted ins and outs.
My only point of contention is character development. I feel there could have been more invested in the character's feelings and inner thoughts. There's a lot of rapid-fire dialogue which is exciting, but sometimes rings a little hollow.
I can recommend this as an entertaining read!

This fast-paced thriller crosses borders in pursuit of a priceless ancient bronzer collar stolen from a warehouse. As the only clue to a rare missing artifact, the collar must be found by all means and criminals are on a hunting spree with MI6 hot on their trail. As a result, men are kidnapped and tortured, wives are caught in despair as to the whereabouts of their loved ones and the situation doesn't get any better for everyone, including the terrorists in East London.
What’s so thrilling about The Mafidon Inheritance by Yomi Akinode? Well, there’s a lot. To begin with, there’s romance here, one that begins when Zook finds Fiona and at the urging of his mother, he brings the girl home. To drive the story forward, Akinode's cast of wonderful characters brings diversity to the plot: Simon pays the ultimate price owing to his sexual preference, Sadiq is a victim of the Afghan-Soviet war and Fiona gets good news after many years of trials and failures. Akinode’s knowledge about countries is exemplary, and his storytelling is spot on, imbued with humor, African culture, and knowledge about international criminal enterprises.
Readers will have to be very keen to get the most out of this book. For instance, Yaya Mila, who shares her experience in writing about “the importance of ordinary citizens' role in advancing Nigerian arts and culture,” appears briefly, adopting the first-person point of view, whereas the book is largely told from the third-person perspective. This might be a little confusing. Again, the characters are many and the plot is moving fast; therefore, it’s possible for a reader to not interact with some characters as desired.
Overall, this novel weaves together psychological thriller, death, romance, and criminal investigation, and at its core, there’s Africa, Nigeria in particular. For readers who love stories where stakes are high, The Mafidon Inheritance is a special treat.
