A Sudden Emotional Chaos

About

Kyle Pearse kept his head down in the driver seat behind the dilapidated warehouse next to a dank lake with a broken fountain in the middle as bullets flew all around the stationary getaway car. Then, he raised his head for a peek, and a bullet zinged him above the right eye. Kyle ducked down, nursing the bloody wound, lamenting his regrets…” So, I’ll never get to see either Billy or Sylvia again…Jesus…,” as Kyle passed out. Kyle hadn’t seen his siblings for over two decades after the El Cajon, San Diego incident.

Two hours later, he awoke in the dark to a sullen streetlight-lit dump. “I’m alive, he said,” as he slowly exited the car and found three dead bodies. He paused for seconds, weighing his options. He then searched until he found rusted drums with lids. He poked holes in the drums and stuffed the bodies in, wiping off sweat as the vision in his right eye blurry in and out. He pushed the drums into the sordid lake and watched them submerge, hissing.

He opened the car trunk, loaded in the guns, and opened one of two bags loaded with dollar bills. He gunned the engine, shook his head in self-pity, “Brass Nacchio is gonna kill me…” the right eye, focusing and unfocusing as he merged onto a Texas highway. Brass Nacchio is the kingpin for the Georgia wing of the Tijuana, Mexican, Fentanyl Cartel.

Yomi Akinode’s A Sudden Emotional Chaos is a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish. The story dives deep into the lives of three siblings, each facing their own struggles after the sudden and tragic loss of their mother and youngest brother. What I found most gripping was how their lives spiraled in different directions—Kyle and Sylvia’s dangerous descent into crime, while Billy, their older brother, tries to rise above his past, building a successful life in real estate. The emotional complexity of their relationships and the way Akinode paints the nuances of grief and survival kept me turning the pages.

That being said, the writing style did take some getting used to. The constant shifts between characters felt a little jarring at times, making the narrative harder to follow. However, the powerful emotions and high-stakes drama more than made up for it. The characters feel real, their struggles raw, and the fast-paced twists kept me hooked. If you're into thrillers with emotional depth and aren’t too bothered by a few rough edges, this book is definitely worth the read.

This book is a saga of how kids grow up after tragically losing a little brother while also having to live without their parents, who would have guided them. They grow up suffering, coping, and trying to find their way. I found myself rooting for these broken characters, even as they were screwing up their lives, breaking laws, and doing horrible things. I definitely was interested the whole time, hoping for a happy ending.

In this book, we follow two brothers and a sister, and we get an insight into how one incident in their childhood had a huge effect on how their lives turned out. It is about guilt, responsibilities, and the choices they had to make in life just to stay alive. The story touches on drugs, drug cartels, stripping, and other criminal activities, but also shows how strong a family bond can be and who you can and can not trust - highly recommended if you like these types of stories.

The story is a mix of action and psychological thriller. It is actually a great read if you are a fan of both genres. What I like about it is Kyle's point of view that the author focuses on. He built the main character so well that it allows the readers to connect with his emotions. While the pacing felt a bit slow for me, I think the author intentionally wrote it that way to keep the readers crave and eager to find out what happens next.

A Sudden Emotional Chaos, by Yoni Akinode, is a different sort of crime thriller.

An interesting narrative that provides a fresh, to me at least, vision of the dark underworld of crime and destitution.

The point of view could have flowed better as the narrative progressed, and I feel that the book could have used another round of editing, as there were some, admittedly, very small grammatical, capitalization, and formatting errors. Small as they were, I found them a little distracting.

The characters were fascinating and the pace quick. In fact, a little too quick in a few instances. These transitions, however, may have contributed to the unsettling nature of the story, so perhaps this was intentional.

My small criticism aside, this gritty story is a very good read and worth your time.

"A Sudden Emotional Chaos" is the perfect title for this book. Kyle Pearse navigates a perilous journey of survival in a world governed by violence and betrayal. Kyle's character is a study in contradictions – a man haunted by his past, yet driven by an unwavering determination to carve out a future free from the shadows that threaten to engulf him. The author's vivid prose brings to life the gritty underbelly of the criminal underworld, from the dilapidated warehouses to the sordid lakes that conceal dark secrets. The story itself is great, but it could use some proper formatting and editing. Apart from that, I definitely recommend it!

After the youngest sibling dies in a tragic accident, the mother dies too. This leads the other siblings into some dark places. Following each of the three siblings, the narrative bounces between them and over the passing years, becoming a little hard to follow. If you like this kind of drama, diving deep into the actions of the tragic characters, you might enjoy it.

While it is compelling to see how these children "move on" after such a tragic loss, their poor choices and the events that led them into it didn't really captivate me. I didn't get a real sense of who they were, only what happened to them. I would have liked to see more redeemable traits and emotional conflict in their dealing with their past before the conclusion. There is an arc for the older brother, who picks himself up and becomes successful, thanks in part to a kind priest assisting the homeless and less fortunate.

After the tragic loss of their brother and mother, the story of how the lives of the three remaining siblings begin to unfold. Sylvia and Kyle end up on the wrong side of the law, introduced to lives involved with crime, murder, and drugs by bad actors who take advantage of them. Their older brother, Billy, goes from homelessness to a successful real estate business, unable to emotionally be there for his younger siblings.

The story is compelling, with unique characters. However, the writing is awkward and often hard to follow because it constantly moves from one character to another. Editing and formatting are also needed.
